Badenoch & Strathspey Streetwork Projects & Midnight Bothy – Grantown-on-Spey (Ref: LEA 075) APPLICANT: Voluntary Action in Badenoch & Strathspey
Voluntary Action Badenoch & Strathspey in partnership with Badenoch & Strathspey Drugs & Alcohol Forum propose to develop a Streetwork Project & Midnight Bothy covering the Grantown-on-Spey as a response to the anti-social behaviour caused by young people aged 10-25yrs involved in drugs and alcohol misuse.
· 1 Streetwork Project based in the Town House, Grantown, and covering the surrounding villages of Strathspey.
· To develop a Midnight Bothy in Grantown as a full time base for staff and young people to interact at night and deliver diversionary activities, similar to the successful one in Aviemore. It is envisaged the project will work towards Peer Education and empowerment of young people while assisting them to make the transition to a better quality of life
· It is proposed in this application to link up with the Aviemore Streetwork project to start to create a local network.
The project addresses issues of `risk behaviour`; `risk management` and supports young people `at risk`. Resources are desperately needed to develop this provision.
The Project is to employ 1 full-time youth worker and 4 part-time workers to work with young people in Grantown to address their social needs and broaden their horizons.
The Streetwork Project work will involve the workers meeting young people on the streets to offer a listening ear and advice if asked for. Their task will be to build positive relationships with the young people so that they come to trust them and are prepared to consider alternatives to their ant-social and risk-taking behaviour and improve the quality of their lives.
The Midnight Bothys` will involve opening the Grantown Community Centre and the Badenoch Leisure Centre building late on Friday and Saturday evenings as well as during the week so that the Streetworkers have somewhere to take the young people they meet on the streets to and somewhere to discuss issues of concerns (Binge drinking and give information and advice as appropriate.

The Project will also use the buildings during the week of offer young people diversionary opportunities to experience new activities eg arts, dance, film-making, sport, outdoor pursuits, music-making, DJ workshops, etc and to get alongside them to talk about a various issues that affect them eg environmental issues, the pros and cons of living in a National Park, healthy living, the effects of drug and alcohol abuse etc
The Project will also extend the opportunities for young people to access youth information sites on the Web and encourage them to get involved in the decision-making processes that impact on their lives.
The aims and objectives of the Project are to undertake effective youth work and facilitate creative and developmental activities which will:
· build self esteem and self confidence,
· develop the ability to manage personal and social relationships,
· increase learning opportunities and develop new skills,
· build the capacity of young people to consider risk taking behaviour and reduce the anti-social behaviour caused by their involvement with drugs and alcohol misuse,
· promote active citizenship and enable them to participate in the decision-making
· processes that affect their lives,
· raise their awareness of the need for the natural and cultural resources of the area they live in to be protected for future generations,
· help them to see how the protection of the environment need not compromise their needs for jobs,

The project was approved on the 2nd September 2004.
The Total Cost of this project is £99,750 with a contribution of 45% from Cairngorms LEADER+.
