Cairngorms Freshwater Pearl Mussel Reintroduction Project (LEA 100)
Scotland is, and the Cairngorms rivers are, a global stronghold for the endangered freshwater pearl mussel. Unfortunately, illegal pearl fishing has meant the loss of many mussel populations in Scotland. The UK Government has listed this species as one of the most threatened in the country and in urgent need of attention. Consequently many people are keen to reintroduce this species to formerly occupied sites in Scotland. There are at least three tributaries in the Cairngorms that have lost their pearl mussels
